Traditionally, “Lying-In” is the period of time for a postpartum mama to bond with her newborn. During that time, you’re establishing a connection that builds on the imprinting that happens in the first few moments after birth. You’re getting to know every crease, dimple and sweet scent of your brand-new baby — and that baby is getting to know you, too.
The other part of Lying-In is just as crucial, and often forgotten. It’s about resting and healing. Part of your to-do list right now — alongside making sure the crib is set up and the onesies are washed and folded — is to make a solid game plan that allows you time to rest, heal and connect with your new baby. No entertaining guests — or toddlers. No cooking, laundry or “bouncing back.” Recruit a helper, and let them take care of you, too.
Earth Mama’s Free Postpartum Lying-In Plan was created to help guide expectant mamas through thinking about their own healing. However much postpartum time you have, take it — and take it slow. Use that time to connect with your newborn, and heal her body and soul. Because having a baby changes everything. Give yourself the time to get used to it.
Earth Mama encourages a modern Lying-In, one where we acknowledge the realities and expectations of a modern mama with the realities of a healing postpartum body and the expectations of a brand new baby. Read all about Lying-In here.
